You are not or 5 books that I recommend
I decided to write a list for you. A list of my favourite books. These books are all about women subjected to violence.
I love these books because of the beauty of the language.
“You are, you are, he says and he searches for a word. He already called me everything. Now he came up with something.
You are not! That’s it, he calls. You are simply not! Now I recognize it. You are not.”
This is a quote from a novel by Brigitte Schwaiger. The original quote is in German. I translated it for you. The novel is called “A Long Holiday” (Ein langer Urlaub).
Brigitte Schwaiger died about 2 years ago.
She was 61 years old when she passed away.
She was found floating in the Danube.
Okay there are other books that I love.
Another example from another author called Paula Köhlmeier:
“She walks home. She jumps over a pavement. Her head asks if Maramba means something good. At home she looks in a dictionary. The word doesn’t exist”.
Paula Köhlmeier died when she was 21. She went hiking near her house in Vorarlberg, she fell on her head and died. This is a quote from a collection of short stories that she wrote. The book is called “Maramba”.
This is the list of books I love:
a) Ausgrenzung by Anna Mitgutsch
b) Axolotl Roadkill by Helene Hegemann
c) Maramba by Paula Köhlmeier
d) Ein langer Urlaub by Brigitte Schwaiger
e) Wie kommt das Salz ins Meer by Brigitte Schwaiger
